Imagine a system that produces healthy organic food, clean water and renewable energy all at the same time. Aquaponics utilizes nature’s power and interconnectedness to manage and sustain agricultural production. It merges aquaculture (raising of aquatic animals such as fish) and hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil) into an environmentally responsible closed-loop growth system powered by renewable energy.
The fish produce waste that is broken down by bacteria into a nitrogen-rich food source for the growing plants. The nutrient water is filtered through a filtration system and pumped into floating grow beds to fertilize the plants and then returned as clean water to the fish tanks.
